Orca Expedition Trips; 3 days and 6 days liveaboard Safari Adventure on board of the MS Sula. Every year from the middle of October to middle of February, the probably largest gathering of Killer Whales in the world take place in Troms region, far north of Norway, due to enormous amounts of Herring that collect in the waters.
The aurora borealis seen from the deck of Sula is stunning. With no obstructions in sight, you can take the best photographs and enjoy the show in all its colorful glory.
What you can expect
MS Sula is a 91-foot boat that could not be called luxurious, but this creates a strong sentiment of why you are there; the whole experience has a sense of true adventure. This is an old fishing boat and you really feel that. What it lacks in comfort and style it more than makes up for in character and the boat itself becomes a major part of the trip. Because it doesn't get light until 10am and is dark around 2.30pm, you spend a lot of time on the boat drinking tea and eating biscuits, it is a wonderfully charming and cosy home for your time at sea. An evening in Sula’s fire-heated hot tub with a dip in the cold Arctic waters is a very popular choice.
There are five crew members and a maximum of twelve guests so the crew to guest ratio is one that will enable you to get the most out of your time on board. The crew is very attentive, taking time to kit up each person properly from a range of drysuits.
The boat has a Lounge, an Equipment Room, a room for drying clothes/suits , 2 Cabins with four beds, 5 Cabins with two beds and 1 Cabin with three beds. There are 2 toilets and 2 showers onboard for the guests. Each individual cabin has its own wash basin with hot and cold running water.
All meals, food and drinks are included in the price and there is a professional Chef who will cook the meals whilst you are on the boat waiting to taste the next delightful dishes. The chef cater also every dietary requirement without compromising on taste. Alcoholic drink and other soft drinks can be pruchased onboard.
Orcas in Norway are of the “North Atlantic Type 1” ecotype, living in closely related pods and sometimes observed in aggregations of hundreds strong. They employ the so-called “carousel feeding” technique, where they herd herring into dense balls, then slap them with their tails to stun the fish and proceed eating them one-by-one. These fjords also visited by great numbers of humpback whales, preying on herring using the lunge feeding technique, a true spectacle to be witnessed.
