Diving in Egypt

Quick facts

Egypt, well known for its historical wrecks, is additionally a destination for lovers of big marine life. Apart from grey, white and black tip reef sharks, oceanic whitetips, hammerheads, tigers and thresher sharks can also be encountered. Whale sharks, manatees and dolphins make an occasional appearance. The reef life is also astounding. There are over 800 species of fish with at least 10% of these found nowhere else in the world. Dive sites in Egypt are as variable as the marine life. You’ll see sheer walls, shallow reefs, deep wrecks, pinnacles and open ocean drifts. There is diving for every level, but many Egyptian liveaboards require a number of logged dives. Furthermore, due to excellent visibility and easy access to excess depths, Egypt is a popular destination for tec divers. Do keep in mind that the Red Sea is a highly salinated body of water. Therefore, you may need to adjust your weight to compensate for the added buoyancy. Note that many liveaboards in Egypt may require an advanced, tec or wreck diver certification due to the dive sites visited during the itinerary.

BEST TIME TO GO

March to May

The best time to dive in Egypt is from March to May or September to November. However, Egypt can be dived year-round, and the best time to dive this Middle Eastern country is a matter of personal preference. December to February is the winter in Egypt. During these months, the water is quite cold, but you’ll also have the best chance at spotting an Oceanic whitetip shark. These winter months represent high season for cultural tourism. So, if you’d like to combine your diving with above-the-water activities, this might be the best time to dive in Egypt for you. March to May are the spring months in Egypt. At this time, the air and water temperatures are both moderately warm, offering a fantastic balance. This is also the best time to see a whale shark, particularly in the northern section of the Red Sea. However, March to May is high season for diving in Egypt, so expect some dive sites to be crowded. June to August are the low season for Egypt. Air temperatures reach uncomfortable levels for outside activity. But, the warmer temperatures force hammerhead sharks further north. June to September are the best months to swim with these predators. The summer months are also your best bet for snagging great liveaboard deals. Finally, September to November is the autumn season in Egypt. Again, air and sea temperatures balance for comfort above and below the surface. These three months are also the best time to spot thresher sharks in the Red Sea. Much like the spring months, Egypt can be crowded at this time.

How to Get to Egypt

There are four ports of departure for liveaboards in Egypt. These are Marsa Alam, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Safaga Port. Most dive safari crews will arrange for roundtrip transfers from the airport for your convenience. These four departure ports are serviced by three airports, namely Hurghada International, Sharm El Sheikh International and Marsa Alam International. The closest airport to Safaga Port is Hurghada International. You may find direct flights to any of these airports from Europe, but it is more popular to fly into Cairo and then transfer to the liveaboard ports by domestic flight.
