Santiago is the capital city of Chile. It is a city which is growing at a very fast pace. This beautiful city is located in the central valley of Chile nestled between Andes Mountains to its east and Cordillera off the west coast. The Santiago metropolitan area has a population of seven million people which makes it the most populous area in the country. It has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm and dry summers. The Andes Mountains receive snow during winters. They can be reached in an hour from Santiago. In summers temperatures can reach a peak of 35 degrees and may drop to 0 degrees Celsius in winters. Mountain climbing is a popular activity in Santiago with various mountains around the city. Cerro Provinica is a popular hiking area. Santiago also sits almost 2 hours from some exciting ski resorts in Andes. The resorts are relatively cheaper and even rent out skiing equipment. At a distance of 115 kilometers to the northwest from Santiago is Valparaiso Port area which has some excellent dive sites. The only problem is that the water could be very cold for comfort. For those who can brave the cold water, there are amazing soft corals, gigantic sponges, flower corals and colonies of frolicking sea-lions. There are also some good wreck dive sites here. A popular wreck is El Falucho, which is easy to dive and has a colorful marine fauna and flora.
