Drenthe is a north eastern province of Netherlands. Its neighbors are Overijssel (south), Friesland (west), Gorningen (north) and Germany’s Emsland and Bentheim districts (east). It is the seventh largest Dutch province by area and tenth largest by population. According to 2014 census, its population is 488,957 and a total area of 2683 square kilometers. Drenthe has a very ancient existence as a settlement. It is believed that 150,000 years ago, Drenthe was inhabited. In the more recent history it remained part of Utrecht, Habsburg Netherlands, Dutch Republic, Batavian Republic and Kingdom of Holland before becoming a part of Netherlands. It was elevated to the status of a province in 1796. The capital city is Assen. The largely quite areas of this province attract a growing number of tourists.
