Diving in Austria

Quick facts

Landlocked Austria wouldn’t seem a good place for diving, but you can’t judge a book by its cover.

The Salzkammergut region of Austria has almost 170 lakes. A favorite is lake Attersee, where there are dive sites galore to check out, in this, the largest of the area’s lakes. Nazi treasures were once held in Wolfgangsee, and though you can’t take them with you, you can still see them on a dive.

By far the most popular dive site in all of Austria is the Green Lake, or Grüner See. Half of the year, the lake is actually a park that surrounds a shallow lake. The spring melt funnels water down to the park, filling it with clean, clear water. Suddenly, the park is transformed into a massive lake of up to 30 feet (10 meters), and sometimes more.

During a trip here you can swim in the cold, gin clear water, checking out park benches, trees, and trails, all on a carpet of green grass. It’s unreal!

What to see

You will probably be surprised by the variety and amount of creatures in Austria’s alpine lakes. You can see huge pike in the shallows, hanging out near vegetation. Whiteling, perch, and trout can be found swimming in mid-levels. Down low you can even run across freshwater eels!

Sometimes, the catfish idling down at the bottom of the lakes will surprise you with their size, try as they may to look inconspicuous.
